Are you feeling tired or burned out? With all that has gone in the past couple of years, it’s no wonder so many of us are experiencing chronic stress, increased depression and anxiety, and sleepless nights. As believers though, we have hope to find rest with the Lord during these times. He is with us giving us all we need in every circumstance. Let’s dive in and see how we can find our rest with the Lord.

What is Rest with the Lord?

There’s a big difference between physical rest and spiritual rest. Constant anxiety and worry put a stress on the body that a nap or a day on the couch watching tv cannot solve. Although you may physically be able to feel better for a time, no lasting change or relief will happen. The only way to find true rest for your body and soul is to find your rest with the Lord.

The Lord provides rest in many different ways. He is always with us, providing us a safe refuge, and speaking our identities over us. He wants to be a part of everything we walk through. He understands suffering on a deeper level than we ever could, and He has empathy and compassion that can reach further into us than any person ever could. You can trust that when you seek Him, you will find rest with the Lord.

20 Verses on how to Rest with the Lord

The Lord is our Refuge

When we seek the Lord, we find rest when we recognize that He is our refuge. Refuge is defined as a condition of being safe or sheltered from pursuit, danger, or trouble. The Bible talks many times about the Lord being our refuge. Meaning He is a place of safety from pursuit, danger, or trouble. So no matter what’s pursuing you – whether it’s physically or emotionally – if you can remember and believe that the Lord is your refuge, you will find rest.

How to Rest with the Lord - He is our Refuge

Psalm 91:1-6

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.”

For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
    and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his pinions,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
You will not fear the terror of the night,
     the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
    nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

Psalm 46:1-3

God is our refuge and strength,
    a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
    though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam,
    though the mountains tremble at its swelling
.

1 Peter 5:6-7; 10

 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. […]  And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

Psalm 23:1-3

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
    He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
    He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
    for his name’s sake.

Psalm 18:2

The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
    my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
    my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold
.

Isaiah 26:4

Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.

Psalm 31:1-5

In you, O Lord, do I take refuge;
    let me never be put to shame;
    in your righteousness deliver me!
Incline your ear to me;
    rescue me speedily!
Be a rock of refuge for me,
    a strong fortress to save me!

For you are my rock and my fortress;
    and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me;
you take me out of the net they have hidden for me,
    for you are my refuge.
Into your hand I commit my spirit;
    you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.

The Lord is Always With Us

Sometimes it feels like we are facing life alone. The weight and burden of it all is too much to bear crushing us under it’s weight. But when you can stop and spend time in prayer, you realize you are not alone after all. The Lord is always with you, giving you what you need. Although the circumstances around us may not be what we want, when we realize the Lord is right there fighting with us and for us we experience His supernatural peace. It is then when we find true rest with the Lord.

How to Rest with the Lord - He is always with us

Matthew 28:20b

“And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Psalm 118:6

The Lord is for me; I will not fear;
What can man do to me?

Colossians 1:17

He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

Romans 8:26-28, 31

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.  And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. […] What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Matthew 1:23

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
    and they shall call his name Immanuel”
(which means, God with us).

1 John 4:13

By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.

Isaiah 40:31

But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 41:10

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

The Lord Gives us Our Identities

A key I have found through my journey for finding true rest is knowing who I am in Christ. When we become believers, we receive a new identity and a new mind. When you know who you truly are in Christ, the burdens of this world seem not as heavy. Knowing who you are and all the blessings you have as a son or daughter in Christ gives you confidence in knowing you are equipped to deal with every situation and have no fear of the outcome. You walk in victory, and there you find true rest with the Lord.

How to Rest with the Lord - He gives us our Identities

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

Galatians 4:6-7

And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”  So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

Colossians 3:3

For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

Ephesians 2:4-7

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

1 John 5:18

We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.

The number one way to find your rest with the Lord is to surround yourself with the Truth. Putting these Bible verses up around you help redirect your mind to where you can find your true rest. Putting down your phone and praying these Bible verses can help you find rest. Getting alone in a room or out in nature escaping the chaos of your day and sitting before the throne of Grace will give you rest.

Doing those few things will help retrain your thinking from focusing on the problems and circumstances in the world to focusing on God’s Kingdom and Promises. This is true Rest. He is true Rest. You can’t do it on your own out of your own willpower or strength. Only through His strength, Spirit, and Word will you find true rest.

  1. Thank you for this encouragement. I wrote a similar one on my blog. 🙂 God yearns to give us His rest, which, like you say, is not about just resting physically, but about resting spiritually.
